GUIDEBOOK FOR SUPPORTING DECISION MAKING UNDER UNCERTAINTIES
    Today's Managers, Tomorrow's Business

by Ettore Piccirillo (Unilever Supply Chain, UK) & Massimo G Noro (Unilever R&D Port Sunlight, UK)

    Table of Contents (29k)
Chapter 1: Decision Under Uncertainty (163k)

This book provides much-needed guidance in making sound business decisions for the business leader or decision maker, especially investment appraisal practitioners such as strategic planners, business analysts, financial partners, and supply chain experts. By “supply chain”, the authors mean the network of retailers, distributors, transporters, storage facilities and suppliers that participate in the sale, delivery and production of a particular product.

The book begins with an introduction to the concept of decision making under uncertainty and the forces driving the business. A gap in the current knowledge is then discovered as it arises from an analysis of the profitability indicators that are currently being used.

With hands-on experience in decision making within the supply chain environment, and coupled with leading-edge mathematical and business formulations, the authors propose how to enrich quantitative and qualitative decision-making measures. This further leads to a decision-making framework and process, supported by a ready-to-use tool (PADOVA).

Readership: Investment appraisal practitioners such as strategic planners, business analysts, financial partners, and supply chain experts alike; graduate-level students in business administration or operations management.

“This book is a valuable ‘hand-on’ guide for the manager and the decision maker … the authors combine a long practical experience in the field of decision making within a large multinational company with a deep knowledge of advanced mathematical models … this is a holistic approach that complements the purely financial approach to decision making with the concepts of flexibility, risk, alignment with company strategy … the book provides the reader with a ready-for-use technique for enhancing rigorous decision making.”

“Substantial growth can only come from taking calculated risks … many recent books point at more rigorous decision making, but this one is different because this book tells you really ‘how’ to do it … just because of the hands-on nature, this is not light reading and it requires background knowledge in mathematics and finance to be appreciated … starting from enhances financial indicators, the authors build successive improvements and finally present their proposed framework … the crux of the presentation is at the heart of chapter 5, where a new indicator of profitability is presented and explained … a book targeted to the professionals, with a guaranteed ‘return on investment’.

“There is an increasing need, today, by practitioners of having a hands-on understanding of business economics and this book addresses such need, combining a hands-on approach with leading theories developed jointly with University of Cambridge … the proposed framework capitalises on the conditions of uncertainty, and exploits the advantages and the opportunities offered now and an innovative indicator is presented (PADOVA), which is useful for investment appraisal analysis … as Peter Drucker said, if you see a successful business, it means that they took the right decision: this book helps the reader to do just that … the book is clear, but not a light reading, but the motivated reader will gain more knowledge than he bargained for: this is a sound investment.
