World Scientific Lecture Notes in Complex Systems - Vol. 7

COMPLEX POPULATION DYNAMICS
Nonlinear Modeling in Ecology, Epidemiology and Genetics

edited by Bernd Blasius (University of Oldenburg, Germany), Jürgen Kurths (University of Potsdam, Germany) & Lewi Stone (Tel Aviv University, Israel)

Table of Contents (58k)
Preface (93k)
Chapter 1: Chaotic dynamics in food web systems (978k)

This collection of review articles is devoted to the modeling of ecological, epidemiological and evolutionary systems. Theoretical mathematical models are perhaps one of the most powerful approaches available for increasing our understanding of the complex population dynamics in these natural systems. Exciting new techniques are currently being developed to meet this challenge, such as generalized or structural modeling, adaptive dynamics or multiplicative processes. Many of these new techniques stem from the field of nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory, where even the simplest mathematical rule can generate a rich variety of dynamical behaviors that bear a strong analogy to biological populations.

Contents:

  • Chaotic Dynamics in Food Web Systems (G F Fussmann)
  • Generalized Models (T Gross et al.)
  • Dynamics of Plant Communities in Drylands (E Meron & E Gilad)
  • Metapopulation Dynamics and the Evolution of Dispersal (K Parvinen)
  • The Scaling Law of Human Travel — A Message from George (D Brockmann & L Hufnagel)
  • Multiplicative Processes in Social Systems (D H Zanette & S C Manrubia)
  • Criticality in Epidemiology (N Stollenwerk & V A A Jansen)
  • Network Models in Epidemiology (A L Lloyd & S Valeika)
  • Genetic Networks (S Bottani & A Mazurie)

Readership: Graduate students of physics, biology and applied mathematics; and academics interested in complex systems, theoretical ecology and nonlinear dynamics.
