NMR IN STRUCTURAL BIOLOGY
A Collection of Papers by Kurt Wüthrich
edited by Kurt Wüthrich (ETH Zürich, Switzerland)
About the Author
Kurt Wüthrich shares his time between the positions of Visiting Scientist at TSRI and Professor of Biophysics at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich (ETHZ), Switzerland. He is also Deputy Director and a Principal Investigator in the Zürich-based National Center of Competence in Research Structural Biology (NCCR Structural Biology). His research interests are in molecular structural biology, protein science and structural genomics. His specialty is nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy with biological macromolecules in solution. Wüthrich has held numerous endowed lectureships and visiting faculty appointments in the USA, Japan, India and Europe. He is a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences, a Foreign Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy and a Member of the Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina. The numerous recognitions for his work include the Stein and Moore Award, the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize, the Marcel Benoist Prize, the Prix Louis Jeantet de Medicine and most recently, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2002.
The volume presents a survey of the research by Kurt Wüthrich and his associates during the period 1965 to 1994. A selection of reprints of original papers on the use of NMR spectroscopy in structural biology is supplemented with an introduction, which outlines the foundations and the historical development of the use of NMR spectroscopy for the determination of three-dimensional structures of biological macromolecules in solution. The original papers are presented in groups highlighting protein structure determination by NMR, studies of dynamic properties and hydration of biological macromolecules, and practical applications of the NMR methodology in fields such as enzymology, transcriptional regulation, immunosuppression and protein folding.
