    BEACH NOURISHMENT
    Theory and Practice

by Robert G Dean (University of Florida, USA)

    About the Author

Robort G Dean has won several awards, including the ASCE John G Moffatt-Frank E Nichol Harbor and Coastal Engineering Award, 1987, the Gold Medal Award of the Florida Shore and Beach Preservation Association, 1987, ASCE International Coastal Engineer Award, 1983, Outstanding Civilian Service Medal by the Department of the Army, 1981, the Jim Purpura Award of the Florida Shore and Beach Preservation Association, 1979, ASCE Award for Significant Contributions in Coastal Engineering and Wave Hydrodynamics, 1990, Bill Carlton Award of the Florida Shore and Beach Preservation Association, 1996, Morrough P O'Brien Award of the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association, 2001. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1980, one of the highest professional distinctions in the US. He has also consulted for approximately 100 firms and governmental agencies in the general area of coastal and ocean engineering. He is the co-author of the textbooks “Water Wave Mechanics for Engineers and Scientists” and “Coastal Processes with Engineering Applications” and the author of over 100 technical publications.

This book is written for engineers, students of coastal processes and laypersons interested in beach nourishment, which consists of the placement of large quantities of good quality sediment on the beach to advance the shoreline seaward. The improvement of project performance through proper design and the predictability of performance are emphasized. The overall longevity of a project is addressed as are local erosional areas. The roles which wave height, project length and sediment quality play in project performance are addressed quantitatively. The results are illustrated through reference to a number of monitored nourishment projects. Biological and economic aspects of beach nourishment are addressed.

“Professor Dean has developed many theoretical, physically sound concepts for beach nourishment design and evaluation, which are easy to apply in practice. The merit of this book is that it collects all of his earlier work and puts it into a comprehensive perspective. The book is a must for nourishment designers and a starting point for coastal scientists interested in nourishment performance.”
    Marcel J F Stive
    Chair of Coastal Engineering
    Delft University of Technology

“The theoretical background to, and the resulting equations for, predicting such changes are well set out in the main text and various appendices. Taken together with the more specific information on sand beach recharge projects in the USA, this book is a useful addition to the literature on coastal engineering.”
