    FIRING CERAMICS

    G Bickley Remmey, Jr was born in 1935 in Philadelphia. He received his degree in ceramic engineering from Penn State University in 1957. In 1960, he joined Bickley Furnaces, Inc. which had been founded only 18 months earlier by his father. He was involved in the early development of jet firing systems for bell kilns as well as shuttle kilns and tunnel kilns. He served Bickley in the capacities as Head of Field Service, Sales Manager and eventually as Vice President. In 1979, Bickley Furnaces, Inc. was sold to Riedhammer GmbH. Mr Remmey continued with Riedhammer until 1981, after which he went into business for himself. He is presently a consultant to Swindell Dressler, a leading American kiln builder. Mr Remmey has published numerous articles on the firing of ceramics and presently is a guest lecturer on the subject of firing at many of the ceramic engineering colleges in the United States. He has most recently published several articles on the subject of pulse/proportional firing.
     

    “Firing Ceramics” is the first textbook in the English language devoted entirely to the subject of firing in over fifty years. Most existing books on ceramic manufacturing processes cover the entire spectrum from raw material to finishing. These texts often have only one or two chapters devoted to the firing process. This book has been written solely on the firing process to serve not only as an in-depth textbook for our ceramic schools but as a firing handbook for anyone who manufactures ceramics.

    This book is divided into three parts with Part I describing what happens inside a kiln to the ceramic itself plus what kiln furniture may be required and how to develop the firing cycle. Part II deals with all the different kinds of kilns that exist and how to select the right kind for your job. Lastly, Part III is devoted to the latest in firing practice, industry by industry.
