POPULATION DYNAMICS AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES IN ASIA

edited by Adrian C Sleigh (Australian National University, Australia), Chee Heng Leng (National University of Singapore, Singapore), Brenda SA Yeoh (National University of Singapore, Singapore), Phua Kai Hong (National University of Singapore, Singapore), & Rachel Safman (National University of Singapore, Singapore)

    Table of Contents (69k)
    Preface (33k)
Chapter 1: Transdisciplinary Approaches to Population Dynamics and Infectious Diseases in Asia (756k)

Initially stimulated by a scholarly workshop convened in Singapore in late 2004, and written over the subsequent 18 months, this volume considers the potentially lethal pattern of infectious disease emergence in Asia. It studies linkages to changes in patterns of human activity, including but not limited to shifts in the distribution and concentration of human settlements and the patterns of movement within and between them. It explores the causes and consequences of infectious agents in the region historically and examines such newly emergent natural biological threats as SARS and avian influenza.

Drawing on a range of disciplinary perspectives, the book contains analyses rooted in the social, physical and biological sciences as well as works which span these fields. Among the issues considered are the ways in which changes in our natural and built environment, social and economic pressures, shifting policies and patterns of collaboration in responding to disease impact upon our approach to and success in containing serious threats.

Infection control has moved beyond the province of clinical experts, epidemiologists and microbiologists, into the mathematics of epidemic prevention and control, as well as the overall physical and human ecology and historical contexts of emerging infections. Not only does such a broad approach enable appreciation of complex forces driving growing epidemic risks in Asia today, it also reveals the importance and relevance of population dynamics, as well as the global urgency of alleviating unsatisfactory health conditions in Asia. The topic and the broad approach has international appeal beyond the region as many of these forces operate throughout the world.

“This book is a valuable contribution to understanding the demographic history of an important but less emphasized region of Southeast Asia. The rich use of many sources makes this a valuable book that will be useful to people interested in the region and on its archival material, much of which is only in Dutch.”
    Southeast Asian Studies

“… as both a framework for understanding and an introduction to population dynamics and infectious diseases in Asia the book is excellent … The book has real utility, rather than only academic interest, for example in introducing some of the difficulties and different national approaches to pandemic influenza preparedness. Such information is potentially important to national policymakers, particularly those who come from outside the health sphere … It provides much information that will be useful for specialists and non-specialists in the field. The three introductory chapters are excellent, and the book succeeds in sustaining its themes and concepts throughout.”
    Economic Analysis & Policy

“On balance, I recommend this book highly … it is a valuable reference text. The volume will stand up well to multiple readings … I will certainly use it as a reference text in my own teaching, and applaud the effort of the editors to bring such diverse and regionally authentic voices to the debates on the future of infectious disease control in the Asia Pacific.”
