World Scientific Lecture Notes in Physics - Vol. 51

SELECTED TOPICS ON THE GENERAL PROPERTIES OF QUANTUM FIELD THEORY

by F Strocchi (International School forAdvanced Studies, Trieste, Italy)

This book provides a readable account of the foundations of QFT, in particular of the Euclidean formulation with emphasis on the interplay between physical requirements and mathematical structures. The general structures underlying the conventional local (renormalizable) formulation of gauge QFT are discussed also on the basis of simple models. The mechanism of confinement, non-trivial topology and q-vacua, chiral symmetry breaking and solution of the U(1) problem are clarified through a careful analysis of the Schwinger model, which settles unclear or debated points.

Contents:

  • General Properties of Relativistic Quantum Field Theory
  • Analyticity Properties of Wightman Functions
  • Euclidean Quantum Field Theory
  • Some General Results in QFT
  • Local Formulations of Gauge Theories
  • Examples

Readership: High energy and elementary particle physicists, mathematical physicists, quantum field theorists and graudate students.

"In summary, this is a good introduction to general quantum field theory which should be useful to graduate students and to particle physicists who would like to know something about the axiomatic approach."

Classical & Quantum Gravity

"The charm of the book rests on the lucid style of writing and the wealth of side remarks valuable even to the experts."
